THE HOSTESSES

THE BIRDCAGE

A PLACE SETTING

MOM AND DAUGHTER AND TABLE

FREE MARTHA

I got to join my mom as a hostess at this year's (2004) Day in the Garden. Although she's hosted for several years of creating tables on her own, I got to join in the fun. There were many cute tables, but I was pretty darn proud of ours.

Our table's theme, Free Martha, refers to domestic goddess Martha Stewart's recent trip to prison. We both hold her in extremely high regard and wanted to do up the table in perfect Martha style: bows, glue guns, and prison chains.

You might not be able to see it from the photos, but there were hours of details that went into our table.

To start, our guests received their very own black and white striped prison shirts. Yes, they were real standard-issue prison shirts, and each guest's name was monogrammed in hot pink. That's how Martha would have wanted it.

The table was appointed with a black and white striped taffeta tablecloth. Each setting had a black water glass. A chain woven with black and white checked ribbon was glued to each black charger. The silver was held by unique napkin rings - working handcuffs. A pink cloth napkin tied together the color theme.

The centerpiece was a large black bird cage (spraypainted black by mom) covered in pink roses of many shades. There were even flowers inside the cage.

Black and white striped mints were place inside white FREE MARTHA mini shopping bags that was placed in front of each plate.

Our menu, which I will post later, included many puns and Martha-esque dishes and tasted great!

Our guests were all mothers and daughters, and we had a blast!
